Candlelight

The darkness falls quickly in December. I enter the grocery store in daylight and thirty minutes later, I wish I’d brought my bike lights to illuminate the journey home. As one who loves sunsets and going to bed early, it’s my time of year.
And then, there’s candlelight. A single flame in so much darkness seems all the more powerful and bright. We are like that too, you know. The brilliant love of one person can light up a room.
When I shut down my computer between 6:30 and 9 p.m., I reach for a candle to accompany me as I make my way toward bed. I’m astounded by how much light one candle throws. The glow is burnished and soft, a value unsung in the era of electricity. We might ask ourselves how many needs are met by light. Perhaps beauty has been overlooked. I think it’s worth a second glance.
When do you appreciate candles? And who do you know that lights up a room?
