Heirloom Tomatoes

This is an excerpt from the weekly News-Loveletter. If you would like it sent to your inbox directly (with all the other juicy bits, including a mini joy practice), you can add yourself to my mailing list here.

“Don’t eat anything bigger than your head,” Seda used to tell the kids. And wowsers — a 2 pound tomato! Sadly, Leo, it’s not for you.

Heirloom tomatoes are the best. Their juicy, honeycombed sweetness is a delight on sandwiches and in salads and salsas. I love them in a scramble, slightly softened by the heat. And my cousin made a fresh tomato bisque last week that was to die for. Yet even with daily eating, the harvest has been bountiful enough that 16 quarts now reside in my freezer for future deliciousness. Whoa.

What is your favorite summer garden vegetable/fruit and how do you like it best?
