Apple Harvest

This is an excerpt from the weekly News-Loveletter. If you would like it sent to your inbox directly (with all the other juicy bits, including a mini joy practice), you can add yourself to my mailing list here.

Last Saturday was the BEST. Seda and I harvested apples in the morning, then lugged the card table, chairs, cutting boards, knives, and bowls out to erect our workstation in the sun. We sorted, washed, dried, and sliced our fruit before setting it aside for its next destination. (See Miru camped out in the toasty greenhouse and Leo helping beside Seda? We love to have them near for these projects!)

The tart Gold Rush apples from our tree made their way into a pie, thanks to Sam’s deft pie crust skills. The sweet, light, Golden Delicious from our neighbor’s tree blended neatly in various concoctions that included figs, peaches, blueberries, cherries, and aronia — all from our place or locally sourced — to make fruit leathers.

Sam and I tag-teamed the pie while Seda dug potatoes from the garden for dinner. And the sun! There is nothing like the golden warmth of an autumn day after a frosty morning. If this is not the highest bliss, I’m not sure what is.

How do you celebrate the harvest of autumn fruit in your area? Is it one of the sweetest signs of autumn for you, too?
